Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis)

Introduction:

Thermal studies are used to study the thermal properties of the materials as a function of temperature, while the materials are subjected to a controlled temperature and atmospheric condition. TGA studies include:

  • Thermogravimetry analyses (TGA) – change in weight
  • Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) – temperature difference

This technique is widely used for polymers, organics, inorganics, metals, alloys, glass, and ceramics materials.

Feature:

  • High performance balance and furnace for accuracy and precision
  • Top loading balance for easy sample load and unload
  • Fast cooling for reduced cycle times and improving productivity
  • Integrated mass flow controller extends applications flexibility

TGA Specification:

  • Balance type: Top-loading, vertical & differential balance
  • Balance Digital resolution: 0.03 μg
  • Weighing range: ± 250 mg, max. sample load 1 g
  • Temperature Range: Room temperature to 1600°C
  • Temperature precision (repeatability): 0.3 K
  • Heating rate: 0.001 to 100 K/min
  • Thermogravimetric resolution: 0.03 μg
  • Thermocouple: Type S
  • Purge gas: Nitrogen
  • Pan: Alumina

Capabilities:

  • Measures weight changes in a material as function of temperature or time under controlled atmosphere
  • Decomposition kinetics and composition analysis
  • Thermal stability of materials
  • Detect physical changes by DTA like crystallization, melting, and phase transitions

Key Applications:

  • Physics, chemistry, material science, metallurgy, biology, nanotechnology
  • Thermal Stability: Degradation and decomposition temperatures of polymers, composites, and natural fibers
  • Composition Analysis: Quantification of fillers, fibers, and residual content
  • Kinetics of Degradation: Evaluation of activation energy and reaction mechanisms
  • Moisture and Volatile Content: Measurement of absorbed water, plasticizers, etc.
  • Phase Transitions: Identification of crystallization, melting, oxidation
  • Comparative Studies: Benchmarking natural fiber reinforced biopolymers
